About Ahimsa Eri Silk:
Ahimsa Eri Silk is a wild silk with a wooly fibrous filament hand spun into yarn, handwoven on traditional throw shuttle looms of Assam. It is elegant in drape, subtle in appearance and the texture of fabric does not carry obvious luster that we typically associate with silk. It is substantial, adaptable and offers dynamic structure in custom-made garments. As a well-being textile, it is nature-sensitive, chemical-free, decomposable from source to product. It is also nourishing for health because of its thermal insulation, with remarkable moisture absorption and UV protection properties. Ahimsa Eri silk is ethically produced with reverence to life and fair benefit to growers, spinners, weavers, dyers and facilitators. It is made by hand, made at home and has gone through no machine or mechanized processing units. Thereby, it qualifies as a slow-movement product where the maker is a farmer, a house-holder and then an artisan. The Ahimsa Eri Silk Project is a project with deep consciousness - The irregularity and slub of the weave is a natural occurrence, so are the waves in selvage that you will observe.

About the Natural Dyes:
Ahimsa Eri Silk being a protein fiber absorbs most natural dyes. Colors available:
Natural: The natural color of the yarn
Indigo: derived from Indigofera Tinctoria - To get the adequate mix of Indigo dye, the dye vat goes through many days of fermentation using the pounded leaves of the plant. Once the dye is ready, the fabric is dipped in the vat. Depending upon the number of dips, the shades of Indigo can vary from lightest to deepest. The variations in the colors are very much possible.

Turmeric: Organic turmeric from Meghalaya has been used to dye these textiles that can vary from lightest hue of yellow to a deep mustard.

Onion Skin: hues of yellowish-green from papery skin of onions by dipping fabric in hot dye bath.

Tea: Tea waste is gathered together till it is sufficient for dyeing. This waste is then boiled to cull out adequate density of dye.

Myrobalan: To achieve deep charcoal shades, the wonder Myrobalan tree fruit is used.

Brazil wood : To achieve a diverse range from reds to pinks and magentas, this small flowering plant wood is a wonder dye source.
Lac: Lac dye source yields hues of red, crimsons and purples. It is found in the wild and is also cultivated in the form of resin secreted by the female lac insects on host trees. This resin is harvested off the stem of trees to extract dye source.
